Why Nature-Based Therapy?

Nature-based therapy, is also known as ecotherapy. For some nature-based therapy taps into healing power of nature to promote mental and emotional well-being. When I first was introduced to nature-based therapy I really appreciated the concept of nature-being a co- therapist, as it provides so much within a counselling session, from engagement of every sense, accessing wonder and beauty, and a place to be away from it all. We all have felt the benefits of time in nature. Researchers have found that the benefits of nature-based therapy include stress reduction, the ability to enhance mood, physical activity, opportunities to increase self-esteem, enhanced creativity, a focus on mindfulness and social connection. When I walk down a path with a client the physical movement can be healing in and of itself, and then we might find something interesting to talk about making therapy less stressful. Sometimes we use nature creatively, or help it to be a source of grounding. I had one client that was an accomplished birder. We would look for certain birds, and birds became a lens we could look at the world and we used bird skills to help them develop their own skills and wellbeing.

Overall, nature-based therapy can provide a holistic approach to mental and emotional well-being that incorporates physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of health.
